Theater projection

My work in theater stems from a fascination with combining experimental video with live elements - something I did and still do for live musicians. Initially, we would set up a projector, hit "play" and let my abstract videos match up in unforeseen ways that felt exciting. It worked, but I wanted to do something more intentional.

The first opportunity to fine-tune this idea came with "SENSES 5," on which I collaborated with Robert Scott Smith and Andra Harbold of Flying Bobcat Theatrical Labratory. This was the first of three plays that I would contribute visuals to, in the "Pop-up at the Leo" series. Each made integral use of visual projections as moving backdrops that the actors could meander through and interact with.

One distinct aspect of the visual projections was their use of composite imagery, or high-contrast blending of multiple layers. To achieve this, the actors had to be lit brightly with stage lights against a dark black background. With help from the Salt Lake Acting Company, we borrowed ten-foot matte sheets and built a small black box in the basement of the Leonardo (pictured above).
